New Year's Eve Afternoon in Times Square

Ok, we went to Times Square for the New Year's Eve celebrations, around 2:30pm, and not it's 4pm and we're home...

We walked up 49th Street to Broadway and then down to just behind 47th Street, and found a spot on the sidewalk where we could stand on the edge of a tree "box" on the sidewalk to get up slightly and see a little, and we could see the post for the ball (which wasn't raised yet). I figured we were too late to get a good view...

It was crowded, and we chatted with a friendly young, gay English couple who were next to us. And decided we'd get to see a bit of the performances and what-not.

But then the police came and told everyone to leave, to go back to 49th Street and 8th Avenue to go through the police security checkpoint. It was a nightmare getting back out again, and then the crowd for the security checkpoint was insane and since that would end up putting us a block or two farther back, without a view of anything, we decided to skip it all and head home...
