My Dad, Octopus Wrangler

My father just embedded this video in an email he sent to me...  You can see him wrangle and Octopus at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport, Oregon...

My parents have been volunteers at the aquarium since it first opened (whatever year that was) in the 90s...  Both still volunteer now, my father with the animal husbandry staff and my mother in the office.  My father also conducts special hands-on tours and octopus handling.

I've been there numerous times and it's a lot of fun.

The last time I was there, in 2008, I followed my father on his fish feeding rounds, snapping lots of photos...

  1. So cool!!! I went swimming with Sting Rays once which was quite an experience, but never octopus. I think that scares me more than a sting ray!

  2. I like the octopuses. They're interesting partly because they're fairly intelligent, though they don't live long enough to gain much knowledge. But they're able to solve puzzles, and do things like twist caps off jars to get food.

I tried sushi earlier this year with a couple of slices of octopus, but I didn't particularly like it, too rubbery, like eating a bathtub toy.
